Requirements to Become an Enrolled Agent (EA)


To earn the EA designation from the IRS, candidates must meet the following requirements:

 Obtain a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN)

✔ Register and pass all three parts of the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE)

✔ Undergo a suitability check, including a review of personal tax compliance

✔ Adhere to ethical standards set by the U.S. Department of the Treasury

Enrolled Agent Exam overview 

Passing the EA Exam is the biggest obstacle to becoming an Enrolled Agent, but it's certainly not impossible. This is a comprehensive test where candidates prove their readiness to represent all types of clients in their tax issues. It consists of three separately taken parts, each covering a different set of tax-related topics.
